Day 31: Drafting the GRP (1)

Objectives:
Students will be able to:
a. examine and reflect on the sections of their GRP outline.
b. briefly write down five sections/ideas to include in their IRP outline.
c. recall and understand the parts of an introduction.
d. write an introduction for the GRP.

I. GRP OUTLINE: Taking into consideration the outlines you produced last class, and the sources we have on the topic, I have written a working outline that we could use to start the drafting of the GRP. Take a few minutes to go over the sections listed. Go over the articles and the HCEF website and see how we can use that information to develop these sections. (5 min)

II. Take a few minutes to think about the topic and purpose of your Individual Research Paper. List ideas you are including in your IRP. (10 min)

III. WRITING THE INTRODUCTION FOR THE GRP (5 min)
  • Check Day 7 and what we learned about introductions then.
  • Think about the parts of an effective introduction:
a) The hook/attention grabber to introduce the topic (general statement, question, quotation, anecdote, surprising statement, historical review, famous person, etc.)

Almost every time you turn on the television you will find a number of shows which are extremely violent.

Are you bothered by the excessive violence on prime time television?

A recent article in Time Magazine states that the viewing of extremely violent television shows is the number one cause of violence in our inner cities.

b) Provide the context/background information on the topic (brief statements). This part of the introduction gives the reader an initial idea of what the topic is.

c) Present the thesis statement. Tell the reader what the research paper will do and how this will be done.

III. PRACTICE (15 min)
Get in groups of two and open a Word document to write a first draft for the GRP introduction.
Write your names on the document.
Send your document to my email address as an attachment: torresx2@illinois.edu
