Day 28: ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY WORSHOP
Today we will
a. study what is an annotated bibliography.
b. write an annotated bibliography for our GRP.
1. Write a source entry for the third article (GRP). In your Dropbox file for the GRP, open a folder for this third source and write a source entry that contains all elements we have studied: APA information, a summary, a relevancy statement, a reliability statement. (10 min)
2. You should have done the same for the third source for your IRP. Check that in Dropbox.
3. Annotated Bibliographies
What is an annotated bibliography?
An example
4. Practice.
Write the annotated bibliography for our GRP. Open a Word document and, following the format and examples posted, write the entries for each of the three sources examined for the GRP. You have the rest of the class to do this. When you finish, upload the document on Dropbox in your GRP file. Make sure you open a folder entitled: ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY.
Assignment:
On Monday, April 2, you will present your IRP Annotated Bibliography. You will upload it on Dropbox and also bring a hard copy to present in class. This assignment is 10% of your grade. No late work will be accepted. Make sure you start working on this assignment tonight so, if any question arises, you can ask me on Friday's class.

Day 26: Getting ready for the writing of an Annotated Bibliography/ Learning to Write Source Entries
* To understand the concept of relevance
* Write a 2-3 relevancy sentences for the two sources chosen for the GRP
* Organize all Dropbox folders both for the GRP and the IRP.
* Take a look at the Homeless Children Education Fund (HCEF)'s solution and discuss it.
1. Let's continue with the organization of the Dropbox folders: (10 min)
a. For the GRP
Check you have your two sources, each with its bibliography information, summary, and reliability statement, (if possible, post the article or add a link for easy location.)
b. For the IRP
Check you have your two sources, each its APA bibliographic information, summary, and reliability statement, (if possible, post the article or add a linf for easy location.)
2. RELEVANCE (10 min)
What is the meaning of RELEVANCE?
The Merriam Webster Dictionarary (2012) defines RELEVANCE as "a relation to the matter at hand." or "the ability to retrieve material that satisfies the needs of the user."
Take a look at the summary you made of the first article we read, Wang's article: Horizons for Homeless Childlren: A comprehensive service model for homeless families.
Do you think the article is relevant to our topic? to our purpose?
Write 2 - 3 sentences stating why this article is relevant at the end of your summary and save it.
Do the same for the second source we read, HCEF's website.
Very important: When you finish reading a source you are planning to use in your research paper, it is important that you write an entry that contains:
a. the APA bibliographic information
b. a summary of the most important ideas
c. a relevance statement
d. a reliability statement
3. Go to HCEF website. (10 minutes)
Form groups of three and discuss what you found that can be used in the paper.
For example: How many solutions have they designed to help with the education of homeless children? Which is exactly the solution that we are going to analyze, evaluate, critique? What are its strengths? What are the problems (weaknesses)?
Each group will render a report on their findings.
Homework:
It is important that at this time you understand clearly what you should have done regarding your INDIVIDUAL RESEARCH PAPER:
Before our next class, Monday March 26, you should have already done for your IRP:
(This is not a dateline, but it will save you a lot of work and pain to have all this ready by this date.)
a) chosen the topic (a problem that affects a specific group of people).
b) narrowed the topic to a manageable size (for a 6-7 research paper).
c) chosen an organization that has attempted/implemented a solution (solutions) to the problem posed by your topic.
d) researched and chosen three sources (two articles and the organization's website).
e) evaluated your sources for reliability and relevance.
f) read one article and the information in the organization's website (with especial emphasis the information provided about the solution(s) you are going to critique/evaluate/analyze).
g) written a summary for each of these sources stating the main ideas found.
h) organized your sources for the IRP the same way you have done for the GRP.
* In Dropbox, open a file named SOURCES.
+ In this file, open a folder for each source you have for the IRP. This folder should contain: the article, or link to the article, the bibliographic information (in APA format), 2-3 statements that explain how this source is relevant for your reserach paper, 2-3 statements that tell why this source is reliable.
Note: As soon as we come back from Spring Break, we will start writing the annotated bibliography for the GRP in class. At home, you will be writing the ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY FOR THE IRP. This assignment is 10% of your grade and is due on Friday, March 30, 9:00 A.M.
Tuesday, March 13, 2012

Homework
Go over the example of an annotated bibliography provided.
Work in your reading of IRP sources.
Saturday, March 10, 2012
Day 24: Writing Summaries
Today we will review how to
a) write a good summary.
b) take useful notes when doing research.
A. Consider the following:
As you conduct your research for your research paper, don't forget:
a) The PURPOSE of the Guided Research Paper
Problem-Solution Paper Assignment: Choose an issue that affects a specific group of people (i.e. children, teenagers, women, etc.) in your local community, state, country, or region. Then choose an organization or a policy maker that has addressed or tried to solve that problem in the past. Write a problem-solution paper that either 1) critiques 1-2 of the current solutions and recommends 1-2 other ideas or 2) critiques 3 current solutions and recommends how to improve them.
b) The Organization: HOMELESS CHILDREN'S EDUCATION FUND
c) and the solution this organization has proposed and you decided to analyze:
CREATING LEARNING CENTERS AND LIBRARY RESOURCES IN THE COMMUNITY TO HELP IN THE EDUCATION OF HOMELESS CHILDREN.
d) Open a folder where you keep each of the sources you are reading for the GRP (do the same for the IRP as well.) This folder should include all the articles you read plus: the bibliographic entry (APA format), the reliability statement, the summary, specific quotes and notes you think you may use, etc. Keeping this file updated will save you a great deal of time once you have to write the annotated bibliography, the research paper, the reference page, etc.
e) Open a folder for a tentative outline for the GRP (and the IRP as well). The different sections of this outline will come from the sources you read. This outline will go through several changes as your research progresses.
B. Writing a good summary
a. Open Dropbox and have your summary on the screen.
b. Answer the following questions about the article using your summary.
Pop quiz
c. What is a good summary?
C. Homework
a) Make sure you have a folder in Dropbox where you keep your sources (articles and APA bibliographic information for both the GRP and the IRP).
Title your folders: GRP_sources; IRP_sources
b) Carefully explore the Website for Homeless Children's Education Fund. Write a summary of its contents; upload this on Dropbox by next class.
c) Read second article for the IRP. Write a summary.

Day 23: Evaluating Sources (Follow up)
* Today we will finish our evaluation of sources for the GRP and choose one article to read intensively.
* We will also finish evaluating the sources for the IRP
If your group has not submitted the articles for the GRP on the Google doc yet, please do so.
If you did, please go over the articles proposed, skim through as may as you can.
I will be reading these articles today and send you one of them for you to read over the weekend.
2. Go over your IRP sources and, after making sure your sources are reliable and academic, please select one article to read.
Homework
a) Read the article for the GRP I sent by email. Write a summary that states the most important ideas presented and upload it on Dropbox by 9:00 AM, Monday, March 12.
b) Choose the first article you will read for the IRP. Start reading it this week, you will be asked to upload a summary by next Friday.
c) As you read your IRP articles, you should have at least two, it is necessary to check the reference pages so you may access other sources; you will need a minimum of five sources for your IRP. Right now you have three (two articles and the organization website, thus, you will need to find other two). This does not have any dateline yet.
Tuesday, March 6, 2012
Day 22: Evaluating Sources (Follow up)
Objectives
* To finish evaluating sources for the GRP
* To start evaluation sources for the IRP
* To look ahead in the process of writing a RP: annotated bibliographies, outlines
1. Evaluating sources for the GRP
a) Check this handout on Evaluating Academic Sources and answer the questions to the best of your ability.
b) Now check the answers. Reflect on your own search for sources and on the sources you actually have.
c)Go over the evaluation you made of your sources as a homework. Make sure you have taken into consideration all the different aspects on reliability and validity. It is important that you remember you will be reading this source entirely, not only to get acquainted with the topic but to obtain specific information that you will include in your paper.
d) Forms groups of two. Present each other the sources you found and explain why you think each particular source is reliable.
e) Choose two sources to present on the GRP Google Doc. Make sure you indicate:
* names of students posting the information
* title of article
* for what type of information this article will likely be used (background, solution, organization)
* link to the article
* a statement of reliability ( 2-3 sentences)
2. The same procedure should be applied to the sources for your IRP.
Homework
Present your three sources the same way for your IRP. Upload them on Dropbox by next Friday, March 9, 12:00.
Sunday, March 4, 2012
Day 21: Evaluating Sources for the GRP and IRP
Students will be able to
*evaluate the sources they researched for the GRP.
Remember, always keep in mind as you go through this process of writing a research paper:
PURPOSE FOR THE GRP AND THE IRP
Choose an issue that affects a specific group of people (i.e. children, teenagers, women, etc.) in your local community, state, country, or region. Then choose an organization or a policy maker that has addressed or tried to solve that problem in the past. Write a problem-solution paper that either 1) critiques 1-2 of the current solutions and recommends 1-2 other ideas.
1. Let's take a look at what you propose as the solution to investigate and at the sources you research to learn more about that solution.
Solutions
sources
2. Review the characteristics of academic writing. Check on the class blog, click on Features of Academic Writing.
3. Evaluating the reliability of a source:
Definition: The quality or state of being dependable.
Synonyms: dependability, responsibility, solidity, sureness, trustability, trustworthiness.
Open the PPP on reliability of websites and go over the information.
After checking each website decide if you would use it for a research paper or not. Say why.
Briefly write what makes a website reliable.
Tips on evaluating a source for reliability:
a) Think about how reliable you need the information to be.
Writing a research paper in university? You need to be strict about sources.
b) Consider the medium with which you are working.
Generally, the more that is invested in the creation and publishing of the material, the more
likely you are to find reliable information.
Peer-reviewed journals
c) Research the author
Who is he/she? Where does he work? What is her education background? Does he have
experience in the field? Has she been cited by other authors?
d) Check the date (publication and revision)
e) Investigate the publisher
f) Evaluate the source's sources (bibliography?)
g) Identify bias (objectivity)
4. Individually, quickly evaluate the two sources you proposed using the criteria you have review today.
a) Decide if the sources you submitted provide information you can use in your paper for:
*the purpose of the paper you are writing
*topic background (providing education to homeless children)
*organization (Homeless Children Education Fund)
*Solution we will investigate (creation of learning centers and resource library to provide homeless children with a place to study and socialize)
If not, you need to keep researching for more appropriate sources. Try to do it today in class, otherwise you will have to do it as a homework.
b) Write 2 - 3 sources justifying the reliability of the source for the GRP.
5. In groups of two, present each other your sources and discuss their reliability. Choose one source, from the four you together will have, and do the following:
a) On the class Google doc, please write
b) your name
c) the title of the source
d) the link (check that it is easy to access it from the document)
e) the explanation to justify this source's reliability
Homework:
1. If you could not finish the submitting of your sources for the GRP, do so on the Google doc by tomorrow Tuesday, March 6, at 10:00 AM. I will look at the sources submitted and choose three we will read for the GRP.
2. Choose a solution for your IRP. (Due Tuesday, March 6, 12:00 midnight)
3. Evaluate the two sources you have for the IRP. Check if they meet the requirements for the writing of your paper (purpose, background, organization, etc.) Write 2-3 sentences justifying their reliability.
Go to Dropbox, click on your IRP file, open a new folder and name it
solution__ source reliability
Upload here: a) a brief statement explaining the solution you will investigate.
b) two sources (with a clear title and link that is easy to follow)
c) a 2-3 sentence statement justifying the realibility of each sentence.
(Due: Tuesday, March 5, 12:00 midnight)

Day 20: Researching the chosen organization for solutions provided
Objectives
Today we will
* narrow down the choices made for organizations for the GRP.
* investigate solutions for the GRP.
* research for sources to analyze the chosen solution(s).
* ropose organization, solution, and sources for the GRP.
1. Narrow down choices of organization.
Please examine the two most voted organizations:
a) National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth
b) Homeless Children Education Fund
Get in groups of 2. You have 15 minutes to browse the websites for these two organizations.
- Why is this a good organization? (reliable, valid, mission, etc.)
- Find solutions this organization has proposed. How many solutions does this organization have proposed/executed?
- Examine each solution. Do you think that you would be able to analyze, evaluate, propose ways to improve this solution?
- Choose one organization and one solution. Post it on the Class Google doc. (Write both your names at the beginning of the entry.)
2. SEARCHING FOR SOURCES
You have 15 minutes to provide two sources for the solution you have proposed to investigate:
One of these sources must come from the UIUC Library Website. Remember what you learned during our library day.
The other source should come from a quick search on-line.
Post these sources on the Google Doc.
Important:
Keep a folder with the sources you will select for your paper. This folder should include:
a) The article/portion of information that will be used.
c) complete, accurate bibliographic entry (using the APA format)
d) your comment on the source (a summary, an evaluation, a reflection on the source's possible uses for the project at hand)
Homework
Both assignments are due on Sunday, March 4, 5:00 PM.
For the GRP: Upload your choice of organization, the solution you propose to analyze, and the two sources you found today.
For the IRP: Follow the same procedure we have done today to narrow down the organizations you have researched for your IRP. Choose a solution to analyze and begin research, both in the Library website as well as on-line. For your IRP you are asked to have more than two sources. You can also visit the Research Section in the Undergraduate Library where they can give you a hand with your research.
Upload your final choice of organization (name, website address), a summary of the solution you will be analyzing and list at least three sources, with bibliographic information and comment (see above on Important)
